The Rosetta Man (Book One of the Rosetta Series)

Wanted: Translator for first contact. Immediate opening.
Danger pay allowance

Estlin Hume lives in Twin Butte, Alberta surrounded by a horde of affectionate squirrels. His involuntary squirrel-attracting talent leaves him evicted, expelled, fired and near penniless until two aliens arrive and adopt him as their translator. Yanked around the world at the center of the first contact crisis, Estlin finds his new employers incomprehensible. As he faces the ultimate language barrier, unsympathetic military forces converging in the South Pacific keep threatening to shoot the messenger. The question on everyone’s mind is why are the aliens here? But Estlin’s starting to think we’ll happily blow ourselves up in the process of finding that out.

“What makes The Rosetta Man stand-out?

An unusually dense squirrel population for sci-fi. It’s light-hearted, accessible sci-fi with exotic present day settings and a pair of aliens who are focused on observing the revealing chaos their visit creates.” – Claire McCague

Praise:

“This book was such a fun mix of genres, hard but accessible sci-fi, political thriller and comedy. … The Rosetta Man has a large cast of characters and one of the most creative plotlines I’ve ever read. It’s chocked full of believable science, politics and refreshingly unique alien life forms. McCague weaves it all together into something fantastically fun—which is not something I expected out of a hard sci-fi/political thriller. … With its endearing mix of humour and science fiction, I’d recommend The Rosetta Man for anyone who enjoyed Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” – Shelly Campbell

“Wow! This came out a while ago and I ignored it in the avalanche of new books but happed to hear the author at a reading… where I had gone to hear someone else. But five minutes into her reading I had bought the book on Kobo because: brilliant opening, brilliant premise. The book did not disappoint. Funny, tense, and ingenious, it is a first contact novel of the first order. A large cast of characters, all with distinct personalities and agendas react to the mystery of the aliens in a completely credible mixture of stupid and inspired that one expects from actual humans. One of the best books I’ve read this year. Unreservedly recommended.” – Robert RUNTE

MORE REVIEWS:

“That was fun sci-fi and it begs for a sequel. The story of a man who’s “shiny” and can therefore translate aliens seems too silly, but somehow it works and works well.” – James

“Excellent read, loved the story line when is the second book coming?” – BJ

“Really enjoyed this one. Strong, clear voice. Big concepts, hard science & plenty of interesting characters facing epic challenges. Original enough plot that it was never stale. Fun ride, adequate explosive quotient.” – Tygrr

“This is definitely a book making you want more. This is a book that fuses multiple genres well. Science Fiction is heavily present as it is a first contact story, but also features aspects of Politics, military, biology, paranormal, action/adventure and much more. Honestly it is terrifically fun, great characters and story, cannot wait for more from Claire. Russians and their squirrels. So crafty.” – John D.

“A fabulously interesting and darkly humorous take on first contact. l really enjoyed it.” – pj17

“I like the animal attracting capabilities and light communications.” – Valerie S

“A fresh take on first contact and alien thinking. Creative, funny, fun, engaging. More please!” – cybersquid

“I quite enjoyed this story. I found it quirky in a good and intriguing way. I liked how the different perspectives were written into the story. I definitely want to read more. There is more, yes?” – Janine K.

“Great book. Very funny. Great characters. Love the aliens and typical humans trying to get rid of them.” – Dennis Richard

“Wonderfully imaginative novel the author created a perfect first contact scenario where the antagonists were already here a respect for science and scientists was apparent not so much for politicians!” – Excellent read!

“Not being familiar with the author, I had not expected this book to hold my interest the way it did. The author seems to have a great understanding of how both scientists and the military would react to first contact and their grudging interactions. I look forward to a sequel. Now I have to go out back and talk to my squirrels.” – DG

“Really pleasant to read such an interesting idea. Entertaining and thoughtful at the same time. I hope the author can find time to add a sequel. The tory wonderfully shows that the block bully ( guess who, America ) is not always right or triumphant. Do, please, write on.” – Don Hines

“The Rosetta Man is an unexpectedly quirky first-encounter story with a lot of imagination, character, and humor.” – Pamela Haswell

“Not a talking animal book! Wonderful fantasy adventure that explores alien contact in a refreshing way without surrendering to cataclysmic global destruction. McCague expertly weaves multiple story lines into one coherent focal point through elements of culture, science, military and the political intertwined with the struggles of everyday human relationships to present a first contact story like no other.” – Terry Cobban

“The Rosetta Man is truly engaging to read. One can’t help but not keep reading once they start. Estlin is a great main character who knows his own mind even when put against quack doctors and angry young girls. A situation that is really great to read.” – Dionne Washington

“The cover and synopsis had me expecting a light-hearted comedy. I didn’t realize I was getting a geopolitical first contact thriller that somehow still managed to be a light-hearted comedy. I really enjoyed this book! The characters are rich and diverse. Estlin and Harry are great, Beth and Bomani made me cry. The story is fast paced and engaging and again, completely unexpected.” – Scott Burtness

“I enjoyed this novel and all the various international characters that cross paths with Hume and the ETs. I rate it a 7/10 on my personal scale.” – TrUzApalOOza, amazon

“Claire McCague has a great style and sense of humour. Her ideas are fresh and interesting. The Rosetta Man pulls you in from the start.” – Vee, amazon

“A completely enjoyable read. Good action, lots of humor, and a global setting. Strongly recommended.” – Diane Lacey
